About 20 US Apache attack helicopters landed at Latvia’s Lilvarde air base today, hours after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The arrival of the helicopters was announced last week, as part of the multinational exercise Saber Strike. However, it is considered part of US aid to the Baltic states. Earlier today, the United States sent F-35 fighter jets to Estonia and Lithuania, extending the stay of US troops in the Baltic region, according to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.
At the same time, about 40 American soldiers arrived in Latvia from Italy. It is the first group of a force of more than 300 soldiers to be deployed there, according to the Latvian Ministry of Defense.
