Several thousand people gathered in the center of Riga this afternoon, protesting against the measures taken to deal with the pandemic and at least one policeman was injured, French Agency journalists reported.
“We will take power again,” the crowd shouted as police tried to calm them down. As the country has declared a state of emergency the demonstration was illegal, as gatherings of more than 20 people are not allowed.
“The government is not stopping imposing and amending the rules for Covid (…) but the situation is not improving and this begs the question of whether those in charge really know what they are doing,” said one of the protesters.
The protesters also denounced President Egils Levic, who allegedly bought a very expensive piano for his house with public money. Some even carried pianos to the demonstration, with the intention of “donating them to President Levic”. A police officer was injured when he was swept away by a piano.
Four protesters were arrested.
