THE Latvia announced today Tuesday (10/8) that he preaches emergency situation along its border with Belarus due to the increased influx of illegal immigrants from the Middle East.
In the last 24 hours, about 200 migrants have entered Latvia from Belarus, an EU and NATO member state with a population of about 1.9 million, according to the APE-MPE.
Poland, which also borders Belarus, announced that 349 migrants have entered its territory since Friday.
“The declaration of a state of emergency means that the border between Latvia and Belarus will be closed to virtually everyone,” said Latvian Prime Minister Christian Karins.
The state of emergency will be activated tomorrow Wednesday and will be valid until November 10.
The patrols of the Latvian border guards have already been reinforced by soldiers, police and members of the European service Frontex.
The state of emergency will allow Latvian security forces to use physical force, if necessary, to repel migrants to Belarus, while Latvian authorities will not be required to accept asylum applications.
Most immigrants arriving in Latvia are Iraqis.
EU ministers are due to discuss an increase in the flow of migrants from Belarus next week. Brussels accuses Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately encouraging illegal immigrants to cross the border into the EU in retaliation for Union sanctions imposed on his regime.
For its part, Lithuania, an ardent supporter and refuge for Belarusian dissidents, launched a policy of repelling migrants to Belarus last week, as 4,000 people have crossed the border since the beginning of the year.
