The Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control announced Wednesday that 5,082 SARS-CoV-2 infections had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, an unprecedented number, and that 17 patients had succumbed to COVID-19 complications.
The rapid spread of the most infectious Omicron variant of the virus is causing the new wave. The cases broke records for the second consecutive day. On Tuesday, there was talk of 3,806.
The two-week incidence index rose sharply to 1,742.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Experts warn that the Baltic country will find it much more difficult than other European countries to cope with the Omicron wave because the level of the population immunized for COVID-19 remains low, especially in vulnerable groups such as the elderly who face with skepticism vaccines.
Latvia is now approaching the mark of 5,000 dead due to complications of COVID-19, while the cases of SARS-CoV-2 have exceeded 300,000.
