The Latvian Prime Minister welcomed the EU agreement to ban most Russian oil imports, noting that EU member states moved together for the sixth package of sanctions to deprive Moscow of the resources to wage its war against Ukraine.
“We are moving as fast as we can together to make it more difficult for Russia to finance this aggressive war in Ukraine,” Christian Karins said after the agreement was reached within the EU, overcoming Hungarian resistance.
The EU should go further and discuss a seventh package of sanctions against Russia, including steps against gas imports, Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Callas said, adding, however, that she did not have high hopes that this would happen.
“I believe that gas should be in the seventh package, but I am also a realist,” Kalas told reporters as she approached the second day of the EU summit in Brussels. “I do not think it will exist,” he added.
Regarding the last-minute agreement reached yesterday on sanctions for Russian oil, Kalas noted: “It is a fair compromise (…) this was the best we could reach. Yesterday I was very wary of reaching an agreement. so it’s positive that we did it. ”
