Latvia’s parliament on Thursday labeled Russia a “state sponsor of terrorism” over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and called on Western allies to impose tougher sanctions on the Kremlin to end the war.
“Latvia recognizes Russia’s actions in Ukraine as targeted genocide against the Ukrainian people,” the Latvian parliament’s resolution said, adding that Western countries should increase military, economic, humanitarian and diplomatic support to Ukraine and support initiatives condemning Russia’s actions.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed gratitude for the resolution of the Latvian parliament.
“Ukraine encourages other states and organizations to follow its example,” Kuleba wrote in a post on Twitter.
Moscow immediately reacted to the Latvian parliament’s move, condemning the resolution, with Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calling it “xenophobic” in a Telegram post.
