Laura Santi: “From Tuscany a historical decision, now I will fight because Umbria also approves the law on assisted suicide”

Tuscany is the first region in Italy to approve A law that regulates medically assisted suicide. The Regional Council approved the rule, which started from a popular initiative law presented by the Luca Coscioni Association, with 27 votes in favor and 13 against. We talked about it with Laura Santi, our collaboratorPerugina, suffering from a progressive and advanced form of multiple sclerosis, which has won an important legal battle to obtain the possibility of accessing the medically assisted suicide in Italy.

Laura what do you think of this law?
«The decision was awaited, in the sense that we knew, as Coscioni Association, to have a majority in favor. Then it is known that at the moment of the vote in the classroom, the previous experiences told us, see that of Veneto, nothing is never taken for granted. I followed all the interventions, the amendments, what the councilors thought, and it was a moment of suspense, of emotion, until I saw that green lights, and I said it is made ».

Why is it so important?
«For the first time in Italy, next to assisted suicide, end of life, medically assisted voluntary death is the word law. It is no longer the sentence of a court, but reads, beyond that it is not national but regional. And this is an immense emotion. Then I would like to say Tuscan force, because it is nice that an innovative push came from Central Italy. Indeed, of regulation, because this law does nothing but regulate an existing right ».

Is it also important from a personal point of view?
“Personally, I am very happy because I have been doing this battle for four years, from the era of the famous signature collection for the referendum on euthanasia that never took place. Coscioni has been there for a long time before me, with all the faces that animated the battle, from Welby to the very first parliamentarian Loris Fortuna, is a long story, and finally seeing approved a law is a truly indescribable joy. It also gives me charge to do what will be my personal battle ».

Which?
«I do not tolerate that in Umbria there is disinterest and that the sick are still left alone. So I myself, now we have to define the details, I will promote myself together with the association of a collection of signatures for a popular initiative law ».

Ready for another battle then …
«It’s all life. You have to understand how much life there is in fighting for the end of life, we are a people full of life. Because life means freedom and rights. Personal rights and freedoms do not hurt anyone. Also because denying the problem does not deny the disease and the suffering of the people who were in silence, mute, abandoned, and finally have an answer. It starts from Tuscany and then we will see as far as we can arrive ».
