Lauterbach: Patience with Omicron until Easter

At the press conference, the German Ministry of Health considers that it is still early to relax measures. The picture may improve towards Easter. Hopes for a “super summer”.

The peak of the pandemic wave with the Omicron mutation is expected “in mid-February, if not a little later”, the German Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach, as he stated today in the now established press conference about the image and the course of the pandemic. “The situation is not really under control yet,” said the Social Democrat politician, but stressed that “the measures taken so far are working and are correct.”

However, the German Ministry of Health estimates that a relaxation of the measures at the moment, as many are already calling for in Germany, “would simply prolong the wave of the pandemic”. However, he left open the possibility of easing the measures before Easter, which this year in Germany is celebrated on April 17, but stressed that it is still early for forecasts.

It is worth noting, however, that in an interview with Stern magazine, the German minister notes that he does not see the future with pessimism, hoping for a “super summer, like last year”, with a vertical reduction of coronavirus cases.

Robert Koch: We are at a turning point

For his part, the head of the Robert Koch Institute, Lothar Wheeler, also said that “we are indeed at a turning point in the pandemic” and that “the Omicron wave could soon end.” Significant problems, however, remain, due to the number of unvaccinated.

“Too many seniors are still unvaccinated. Hospitals continue to be overcrowded, but fortunately not overcrowded,” he said. According to the head of the German epidemiological institute, as long as people are still lost daily from the coronavirus and as long as patients with coronavirus are hospitalized in the intensive care unit, there is still uncertainty.

The “new front” of Bavaria

The press conference also covered the case of the state of Bavaria, where the Christian Socialist Prime Minister Markus Zender announced the suspension of compulsory vaccination for health personnel.

This is a “dangerous signal” emitted by Bavaria, said Karl Lauterbach, blaming the Bavarian prime minister for “succumbing” to anti-vaccine protesters on the streets. He stressed that it is “unacceptable for health workers not to accept Western scientific knowledge”.

However, the German Minister of Health clarified that the decision of Bavaria “means nothing” on the issue of compulsory vaccination at the federal level. “That is what the German parliament decides,” he said.
