Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will travel to Myanmar on Wednesday where he will hold defense-focused talks with the leaders of the ruling junta, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said today.
“Discussions are planned between the foreign minister and the leaders of Myanmar,” who came to power after a coup last year, Russian diplomatic spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters.
Defense and security cooperation will be on the agenda of their talks, he added.
Russia, increasingly isolated on the international stage because of its attack on Ukraine, is showing increasing support for Myanmar’s junta, to which it mainly sells arms.
The Burmese junta, accused of atrocities, continues its bloody crackdown on its opponents with more than 2,000 civilians killed and more than 15,000 arrested since the February 1, 2021 coup, according to a local NGO.
After being arrested on the day of the coup, Aung San Suu Kyi, 77, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, faces multiple charges that could lead to a total of up to 150 years in prison.
The country’s junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, made a trip to Russia in mid-July, during which he spoke with nuclear and aerospace officials.
Despite its support, Russia, like China, last week approved a UN Security Council resolution condemning the junta’s execution of four prisoners.
