Lavrov: Over 200 captured Ukrainian fighters sentenced to prison terms in Russia

Russian courts have sentenced more than 200 Ukrainian fighters to prison terms since the start of the Russian invasion of UkraineForeign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the Russian state news agency RIA.

“Courts of the Russian Federation have already sentenced more than 200 members of Ukrainian armed forces to multi-year prison terms for committing atrocities”the head of Russian diplomacy emphasized.

Moscow and Kiev accuse each other of committing atrocities in the war which Russia began with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

UN continues to gather evidence of war crimes and human rights abuses committed by Russian authoritiesincluding torture, rape and the forced movement of children.

On March, The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges of forcibly deporting Ukrainians to Russia. The Court emphasized that this constituted a war crime.

“In our pursuit of justice, the main result of the year is undoubtedly the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for Putin”Ukraine's Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said in a statement yesterday.

The General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine has recorded more than 121,000 Russian crimes aggression and war crimes since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

The UN has also identified cases where Ukrainian authorities have committed human rights abuses against people Kiev accuses of collaborating with Russian authorities.

Lavrov told RIA that Russia's main investigative body, the Investigative Committee, has opened 4,000 criminal cases against about 900 Ukrainians.

“They include not only members of radical nationalist organizations, members of the Ukrainian security forces and mercenaries, but also officials of the military and political leadership of Ukraine”said the Russian Foreign Minister.
