Lavrov: Sending a peacekeeping force from the West to Ukraine could mean NATO-Russia war

LAST UPDATE: 12.06

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that sending a peacekeeping force to Ukraine could lead to a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.

Last week, Poland announced that it would formally submit a proposal for the development of an international peacekeeping mission in Ukraine at the next NATO summit.

“I hope they understand what they are saying,” Lavrov told staff and students at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

“This will be the direct confrontation between the Russians and the NATO armed forces, which everyone has not only tried to avoid, but has said should not happen in theory,” Lavrov said.

Moscow has accused Kyiv of obstructing peace talks by making proposals that Russia cannot accept.

Ukraine has said it is willing to negotiate but will not surrender or accept Russian ultimatums.

According to Lavrov, the Ukrainian authorities are withdrawing their proposals from the talks, making it difficult to make progress.

“The talks have started, they are difficult because the Ukrainian side … is constantly changing its mind and withdrawing from its own proposals,” Lavrov said.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described talks with Russia as “difficult” and sometimes “controversial.”

Russia has sent thousands of troops to Ukraine as part of a “special operation” it has called for the demilitarization and “de-Naziization” of Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces have shown great resistance and the West has imposed severe sanctions on Russia in an effort to force it to withdraw its forces.
