Lavrov: Sending missile systems to Ukraine risks ‘third country’ involvement in war

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that sending advanced rocket launchers from the United States to Ukraine raises the risk of a “third country” being involved in the Moscow-Kiev conflict.

The Russian foreign minister responded in this way when asked in a press conference given to Saudi Arabia about the US plans to deliver to Ukraine these systems that could accurately hit Russian targets.

Earlier, a White House official assured that the United States would provide these systems for use by Ukraine in its defense against Russian forces, but not for blows inside Russian territory. Jonathan Feiner, the White House deputy national security adviser, said the Ukrainians were calling for the system and that Washington believed it would meet their needs.

“We have asked the Ukrainians for assurances that they will not use them to hit (targets) inside Russia. The Ukrainians are fighting a defensive war. The Russian forces are on their territory,” Feiner told CNN.

The US official noted that there are many targets that the Ukrainians can not hit with the weapons they have today and the US missile system “will make a difference” in the clashes in the southeastern part of the country, where Russian forces are concentrated.

A senior government official said Tuesday that Kyiv had assured it would not use the missiles to hit targets inside Russia.

A Russian official said Moscow was “very negative” about the development. Feiner, however, said Biden had made it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin what the consequences of an invasion of Ukraine would be. “We are doing exactly what we said. Russia has provoked itself by launching an attack on a sovereign country,” he added.

Biden himself told reporters on Tuesday that the Americans “will not send missile systems to Ukraine that (could) hit Russia.”
