Lavrov thanked Pyongyang for supporting Moscow in the war in Ukraine

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov thanked North Korea because he supports his country’s military actions in Ukraine and pledged Moscow’s “full support and solidarity” to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Lavrov arrived yesterday, Wednesday, in Pyongyang for meetings aimed at preparation of a visit by President Vladimir Putin, who has strengthened cooperation with politically isolated North Korea. Speaking at a reception hosted by the North Korean government yesterday, Lavrov said Moscow greatly appreciated “the unwavering and principled support” offered by the Pyongyang to Russia in the war that the latter is waging in Ukraine and which it calls a “special military operation. Similarly, the Russian Federation expresses it its full support and solidarity with the aspirations of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea“, said Sergey Lavrov, according to the text of his speech made public through his ministry’s website, as reported by APE-MPE.

After talks with his North Korean counterpart Cho Son Hui, Lavrov told reporters that increased military activities by the United States and its allies Japan and South Korea were a cause for concern, Russia’s state news agency RIA reported. . In his comments, Lavrov argued that North Korea, China and Russia are pursuing a policy aimed at easing regional tensions.

North Korean state media reported that Lavrov’s visit marks an “important opportunity” to further strengthen relations between Pyongyang and Moscow. Photos released by the Russian Foreign Ministry showed people holding flowers and flags of the two countries greeting Lavrov upon his arrival.
