Lavrov: The Italian peace plan is not serious

The head of the Russian diplomacy assessed in an interview published today that the peace plan in Ukraine proposed by Italy is not “serious”.

Sergei Lavrov also stated that he knows the content only from the press, as the text has not been transmitted to Moscow. Undersecretary of State Andrei Rudenko said Monday that he had been received and was being questioned.

“It’s a matter of Crimea [η ουκρανική χερσόνησος που προσαρτήθηκε από τη Ρωσία] and Donbass [μια αυτόνομη περιφέρεια που αναγνωρίζεται από τη Μόσχα] “(will) belong to Ukraine with a great deal of autonomy,” Lavrov said in an interview with state television RT.

“Serious policies that want results can not suggest things like these, those who do are those who want to advertise themselves in front of their electoral audience,” he added in a statement apparently addressed to Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio.

The latter had announced a week ago that his country had proposed to the UN the establishment of an “international relief team” which would try to reach a “step by step” ceasefire in Ukraine.

The details of this plan have not been made public, but according to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the document submitted to the UN provides for four stages:

– Ceasefire in Ukraine and demilitarization of the front under UN supervision

– negotiations on the status of Ukraine, which could join the EU but not NATO

– bilateral agreement between Ukraine and Russia on Crimea and Donbass to be autonomous regions, but under Ukrainian sovereignty

reaching a multilateral agreement on peace and security in Europe.
