Lavrov to Putin: Let’s give more time to the diplomatic route for Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday suggested to President Vladimir Putin that Moscow continue diplomatic efforts to secure security guarantees from the West, amid escalating tensions over developments in Ukraine.

Lavrov told Putin that the United States had made concrete proposals to reduce the military threat, but noted that responses from the European Union and NATO were unsatisfactory.

In a televised debate, Putin appeared to ask Lavrov if an agreement could be reached to address Russia’s security concerns or if he was simply engaging in torturous negotiations.

Lavrov responded: “We have repeatedly warned that we will not allow indefinite negotiations on issues that need to be resolved today.” But as foreign minister, he said, “I must say that there is always a chance that problems will be solved.”

He added: “It seems to me that the opportunities for dialogue have not been exhausted […] At this stage, I would suggest we continue [σ.σ.: διπλωματικά] and expand the negotiations. ”

Lavrov’s comments appeared to signal a reduced chance of an imminent Russian invasion, following repeated warnings from the United States that Russia could attack Ukraine at any time.

Lavrov said he had received “unsatisfactory” responses to a letter he sent to dozens of members of the European Union and NATO on the issue of “indivisible security”.

“None of my fellow ministers responded to my immediate message,” he said. “Therefore, we will continue to seek a specific response from each country.”
