Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in talks with his Pakistani counterpart on Thursday, said he hoped there was an opportunity to return to international law and obligations.
“Unfortunately, our Western friends do not respect international law, trying to destroy it and promote what they call a ‘rule-based order,'” Lavrov said in a statement posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website.
“As you may have already heard, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin made a detailed statement this morning regarding NATO actions and the announcement that they are no longer limited to the territories of the Member States, but now claim a larger scale. They are “responsible for global security”.
Mr Lavrov added that he had “intense and detailed discussions with our American counterparts, with other NATO members”. “We hope that there is another opportunity to return to international law and international commitments,” he said.
“As we take the steps announced by the president to ensure the security of the country and the Russian people, we will certainly always be ready for a dialogue that will bring us back to justice and the principles of the UN Charter,” he said.
