Russia’s foreign minister is visiting Algeria, a key ally of Moscow and a gas exporter, to which European countries are seeking to reduce their dependence on Russian gas.
The Russian Foreign Minister will meet today with his Algerian counterpart Ramdan Lamamra before being received by President Abdelmajid Teboun, according to local media.
On April 18, Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Abdelmajid Tembun and discussed “coordination within OPEC +” as well as “the situation in Ukraine”, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
Algeria, a major gas exporter, supplies 11% of Europe’s gas, compared with 47% for Russia.
Many European countries seeking to reduce their dependence on Russian gas after the invasion of Ukraine have turned to Algeria, Moscow’s ally. However, Algeria has very limited potential to increase exports.
Taking care not to oppose Moscow, Algeria reiterates that its potential to increase exports to Europe is too limited to replace Russian gas supplies.
Lavrov’s visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Algiers and Moscow.
