Lavrov’s visit to Belgrade was canceled

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to Serbia has been canceled because countries around Serbia have closed their airspace to his aircraft, a high-ranking source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told Interfax news agency today.

The source confirmed information to Serbian media that Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro had closed their airspace for the plane that was to transport the top Moscow diplomat to Belgrade on Monday.

“Our diplomacy does not yet have the capability of teleportation,” the source said.

There has been no comment from the Russian Foreign Ministry so far.

Serbia, which has close cultural ties with Russia, has repelled pressure to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and is not participating in Western sanctions against Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic agreed last month that Russia would continue to supply gas to Serbia, while it cut off supplies to other countries because they refused to pay for Russian gas in rubles.
