The city of Belém sanctioned, this Wednesday (10), a law that prohibits men with a history of aggression against women from being appointed to public office.
Law No. 9,792/2022, authored by the councilor of Belém Emerson Sampaio (PP), prevents the appointment of men to public positions in the municipality convicted, by court decision, of violent crimes against women.
In this way, they are prevented from assuming positions in public tenders or through selection for entry into public bodies of direct and indirect administration, autarchies and foundations of the administrative structure of Belém.
“We are doing the good fight against machismo and its consequences, including femicide, physical and psychological aggression. This Law is an important legal and social innovation”, said the mayor of Belém, Edmilson Rodigues.
The head of the Women’s Coordination of Belém (Combel), Emanuelle Raiol, said that the law comes to end a “custom of aggressors of women who hide in their public offices to avoid being duly punished”.
Data on violence against women in Pará
A total of 4,712 women were victims of domestic violence in the capital of Pará in 2020, according to a report by the Public Ministry of the State of Pará (MPP) presented to society in March 2021.
These data only represent women who were served by the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Domestic and Family Violence in 2020. In other words, the number may be higher if we consider women who did not file complaints.
Another data that alerts to the problem is from the Secretary of State for Public Security and Social Defense of Pará (Segup), which recorded more than 6,700 cases of violence in the domestic environment in the first half of 2021 alone.
The number corresponds to the 12% increase registered in the same period of 2020.
