Law since 1798 on “Enemies of Aliens” is cited by Trump – brake on a federal judge

A 1798 law on enemies of foreigners in times of war was cited by Donald Trump to deport five Venezuelan citizens from the US. The White House issued a presidential proclamation on Saturday, aiming for Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang members, saying: “Tren de Aragua (TDA) is a characterized foreign terrorist organization with thousands of members, many of which have infiltrated the United States.” A few hours later, however, a federal judge temporarily prevented the prescribed deportations. US regional judge James Basberg, of the Federal Regional Court of Washington, agreed on Saturday to issue a temporary restrictive order that prevents the deportation of the Venezuelanians for 14 days. “Given the emergency circumstances that were announced this morning, he decided that the issuance of an immediate order to maintain the status quo is justified until he was heard,” Basberg wrote in his decision.
