Lawmakers Need More Protection, Police Chief Says US Capitol

The current political climate in the United States calls for more resources to provide additional layers of physical security for members of Congress, US Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said Tuesday.

Authorities are monitoring thousands of cases across the country to thwart potential threats, Manger said in a statement, just hours before the man accused of beating the husband of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a hammer made his first court appearance.

Paul Pelosi, 82, suffered serious injuries Friday at his home in San Francisco. Democrat Pelosi was in Washington at the time.

David Wayne DePape, 42, faced charges from the State of California for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, elder abuse and threatening a public official. Separate federal charges of assault and attempted kidnapping are also expected.

“We believe today’s political climate calls for more resources to provide additional layers of physical security for members of Congress,” said Manger. “This plan would include an emphasis on adding redundancies to measures that are already in place for Congressional leadership,” he said without providing details.

The attack on Pelosi’s husband came just before the November 8 congressional elections and follows months of bitter campaigning as Republicans try to gain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
