Lawyer makes anti-Semitic speech and wants Jews expelled from institute; OAB calls for investigation

Lawyer Hariberto de Miranda Jordão Filho made anti-Semitic statements during a meeting of the Brazilian Lawyers Institute (IAB) last Wednesday (20). Institutions linked to law, such as the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), reacted to the statements.

A member of the institute's board of directors, he called for all Jewish presidents of IAB committees to be fired. “They must be expelled, eliminated,” said Jordão Filho, who complained about the fact that the Israeli Federation of Rio de Janeiro had contacted the OAB regarding other anti-Semitic demonstrations that he had already made.

In his speech at the IAB he also compared what happens in the War in the Middle East to the Holocaust, calling the Israelis Nazis. Jews were the main victims of Nazism.

Some members of the institute tried to interrupt Jordão Filho's speech, but the president of the session allowed the lawyer to continue, saying that he will “assume the consequences of this”.

The IAB reported, in a note on Thursday (21), that it initiated administrative proceedings against Jordão Filho and regretted the statements, which “hurt the dignity of all those directly or indirectly involved with the sad speech”. According to the institute, the procedure will serve “to guarantee the integrity and reputation of the IAB, as well as to ensure the effective fulfillment of its fundamental values”.

The São Paulo section of the OAB also said it repudiated the statements and asked that “the competent authorities” investigate the case and adopt “all applicable measures in accordance with current legislation, in order to curb such attitudes and ensure that justice is effectively carried out”.

The Union of Law Firms of the States of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Sinsa) commented that the statements are “unacceptable, they violate the ethical and moral principles that govern the performance of legal professionals and coexistence in society”.

“Advocacy, in essence, must be exercised based on ethics, mutual respect and the uncompromising defense of human rights, combating any form of discrimination, be it racial, religious, gender, or any other nature”, he adds the note, released this Saturday (23) and signed by the union president, Gisela da Silva Freire.

A CNN seeks contact with Hariberto de Miranda Jordão Filho to comment on the reaction to his statements.
