A 43-year-old man, identified as the leader of a criminal group responsible for stealing boats on the Madeira River, was arrested during an operation, this Sunday (15), in the city of Manicoré, about 332 kilometers from Manaus (AM).
Operation ‘Águas Seguras’, by the Civil and Military Police, had already apprehended three other suspects of being part of the group, in addition to more than R$200,000 in merchandise recovered in police actions.
According to delegate Marcus Vieira, from the 72nd Interactive Police Station in Manicoré, the investigations began on September 6 of this year, after a ferry carrying oil and sugar was looted on the Madeira River by criminals.
“By registering the Police Report filed by representatives of the company that owns the supplies, we were able to identify who the main member of the criminal group was and confirm that they are habitual in stealing various products from cargo vessels that circulate on the Madeira River,” explained the delegate.
The police chief also said that there is evidence that the man also buys stolen goods in situations where he does not steal directly. The suspect is also being investigated for active corruption, for avoiding inspection on his property.
The Civil Police also stated that the teams managed to recover the supplies that were stolen from the vessel during the actions, carried out on a floating platform owned by the man, according to Lieutenant Gama.
“A thousand liters of diesel that were being stored illegally were also seized, characterizing it as an environmental crime, in addition to R$4,200 in cash, a pressure weapon and a cell phone,” said the lieutenant.
In a statement, the Public Security Department stated that the man will be charged with theft, receiving stolen goods and environmental crimes, and possibly active corruption. Investigations into the theft of the vessel will continue to identify and arrest the rest of the criminal group.
