Leaders of Poland and Baltic States Head to Kiev to Discuss Military Assistance

The presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia arrived in Kiev on Wednesday (13) to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Polish leader Andrzej Duda’s office said.

The four add to a growing number of European politicians visiting the Ukrainian capital since Russian forces were driven from the north of the country earlier this month.

“On my way to Kiev with a strong message of political support and military assistance,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said in a tweet on Wednesday, along with a photo of the presidents standing next to a train.

The Polish president’s office confirmed on Twitter that they had arrived in Kiev.

The meeting will focus on forms of assistance to civilians and military personnel in Ukraine, as well as war crimes investigations, said a spokesman for Estonian President Alar Karis.

The visit comes a day after US President Joe Biden called Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine a genocide, while Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed that Russia would “calmly” continue its operation and achieve its goals. .

Putin sent his troops to Ukraine on February 24 for what he calls a “special military operation” to demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine. Ukraine and the West say Putin has launched a war of unprovoked aggression.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had planned to visit Kiev at the same time “to send a strong signal of European solidarity with Ukraine”, but the trip was not well received by Ukraine, he said on Tuesday.

German newspaper Bild reported that Zelensky had rejected Steinmeier’s plans to visit due to his close relations with Russia in recent years and his support for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, designed to double the flow of Russian gas to Germany, which was eventually suspended. after the invasion.
