Learn what comes next to astronauts who returned to Earth after 9 months

The team of Crew-9 composed by astronauts Butch Wilmore, Suni Williams and Nick Hague from NASA, and the Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, He made a safe landing on the Florida coast on Tuesday (18). See below what will be the next steps of the crew who spent nine months at the International Space Station (ISS).

An hour after landing, the capsule was lifted to a recovery ship, safety checks were completed and astronauts landed from the spacecraft in wheels while their bodies began to readjust to life with gravity. See photos above.

While still aboard the Spacex recovery ship, the four astronauts will undergo health tests, ensuring that no medical emergency needs to be treated.

Problems may arise: When Spacex’s Crew-8 mission returned last year, the four astronauts had to be transported to a Florida hospital rather than returning to their base in Houston immediately due to an unveiled medical problem. The measure was taken by excessive caution, said NASA at the time.

After passing medical examinations, the CREW-9 team will travel by helicopter to an airport in Florida, where they will board a flight to Ellington Field of Houston. The landing track is just below NASA’s Johnson Space Center road – the center of the space agency that astronauts call home.

Upon returning home, astronauts will continue to undergo medical examinations until they are released by flight surgeons.

“In those early days … We were surrounded by flight surgeons who took care of us, and we were just getting used to life in 1g-life back to Earth after we were weightless for so many months,” said NASA Warren astronaut “Woody” Hoburg, who piloted Spacex Crew-6 mission in 2023.
