Learning from Covid will be used for monkeypox, says Anvisa manager

The general manager of medicines at the National Health Surveillance Agency, Nélio César de Aquino, believes that the lessons learned during the entire Covid-19 pandemic will now help to face the monkeypox outbreak.

In an interview with CNN Radio he stated that “Anvisa’s internal organization is now different”: “We already have a team that is used to moments of crisis, the learning was great with Covid-19 and will be used for this period.”

The specialist also highlights that the situation is “a little more comfortable” than with Covid, as there are products on the market – such as testing kits, medicines and vaccines – against monkeypox.

The creation of the Monkeypox Emergency Technical Committee was announced last Wednesday (27) by Anvisa, with the aim, according to Nélio de Aquino, to expedite the analysis of medicines and vaccines against the disease.

This stage will also be influenced by the legacy obtained during the pandemic crisis: “We learned from interlocution and international cooperation, especially in the development of vaccines, to accelerate the process, it is what we call regulatory trust, to deal with other authorities and avoid duplication of action.”

The committee is made up of Anvisa employees and must act to establish a dialogue with the academic society and coordinate actions on all fronts against monkeypox.
