Lebanon’s government has called for an emergency meeting of the United National Security Council following the latest Israeli attack in Beirut, accusing Israel of carrying out acts “akin to genocide” on Lebanese soil.
The country’s interim cabinet said in a statement published on X that the “attack on a populated residential area once again proves that the Israeli enemy has no regard for humanitarian, legal or moral issues, but continues what amounts to genocide.”
“This new aggression is a matter of conscience for the international community, which remains silent about violations of human rights and justice,” the note states.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and his ministers were briefed on the attack during a cabinet meeting, where he stressed that the latest Israeli offensives — including this week’s pager explosions — were “a shameful and condemned criminal act, akin to genocide and a horrific massacre.”
Calling on the international community to act in the face of Israeli military action, Mikati noted that Lebanon had received calls from international representatives confirming that Israel had “crossed red lines.”
Mikati also announced that he will travel to New York this Friday (20) to speak directly at the UN and that he will submit a proposal to “introduce international laws to safeguard civilian technologies from being used for military purposes”.
