Lebanese PM says escalation of war in Gaza could plunge Middle East “into chaos”

Lebanon’s interim prime minister, Najib Mikati, said an escalation of the war in Gaza could plunge the entire region “into chaos.”

“I see that there is a real race between a ceasefire in Gaza and the escalation [da guerra]because the escalation would not only affect Lebanon, and I fear that the escalation will spread throughout the region, plunging the Middle East into chaos,” Mikati said in a video interview this Monday (30) with AFPTV.

As the war in Gaza intensifies, Lebanon’s radical Islamic group Hezbollah continues to fire rockets at Israel. Israeli airstrikes have hit southern Lebanon.

Mikati said his country is in the “heart of the storm… but it has survived all the wars in the region and, on the contrary, Lebanon has been the most resilient”.

Lebanon has also been the scene of protests, in which thousands of people demonstrate their support for the Palestinians in Gaza following Israel’s siege and constant airstrikes against the region.

Humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza

The number of people killed during Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip since October 7 has risen to 7,950, the Palestinian Ministry of Health, controlled by the radical Islamic group Hamas in Ramallah, reported on Sunday (29). More than 20 thousand people are injured.

Almost 73% of the dead belong to vulnerable populations, including children, women and the elderly, according to the ministry report.

“We are fighting so that Brazilians are not affected by the humanitarian catastrophe that is plaguing Gaza,” said the Brazilian ambassador to Palestine, Alessandro Candeas.

The government has been sending money so that Brazilians can guarantee the minimum for survival. The prices of products at the fair and in local markets, however, have tripled, sometimes quadrupled. Everyone is being advised to stock up on food and basic products.

The siege by Israel has caused shortages of water, food, medicine and electricity in Gaza.

On Sunday, thousands of citizens invaded warehouses and distribution centers of the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA) to grab flour and basic survival items.
