Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed the ceasefire agreement in a call with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday (26).
“I received a call from US President Joe Biden, during which we discussed the current situation. I thanked him for the US support for Lebanon and the efforts undertaken by his envoy, Mr. (Amos) Hochstein,” Mikati said in an X post.
Mikati thanked both the US and France for their efforts to reach the ceasefire agreement, adding that the agreement was “a fundamental step towards establishing calm and stability in Lebanon” and would help “establish regional stability”.
He reiterated his government’s commitment to strengthening “the army presence in the south”, implementing UN resolution 1701 and cooperating with the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
The resolution, which ended the 2006 war between Lebanon and Israel, stipulates that the only armed groups in the area south of Lebanon’s Litani River should be the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers.
Mikati called on Israel to fully comply with the ceasefire agreement and withdraw from all areas it occupies, in accordance with the UN resolution.
