Lebanon does not seek “any expansion of war” with Israel, minister says

Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said on Monday (29) that Beirut is not seeking “any expansion of the war” with Israel.

“We don’t want an escalation,” he told Reuters after separate meetings with Hezbollah’s foreign affairs official Ammar Moussawi and the United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

According to two Israeli officials, Israel wants to hold Hezbollah accountable but does not want to drag the entire Middle East into an all-out war.

Meanwhile, Lebanon is bracing for retaliation after a rocket attack that killed 12 children and teenagers in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday (27).

Two other officials said Israel was bracing for the possibility of days of fighting after Saturday’s (27) attack on a sports field in a Druze town blamed on the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, which has denied any link to the incident.

The attack raised concerns that months of cross-border hostilities between Israel and the heavily armed Hezbollah could escalate into a wider and more destructive war.
