Lebanon: Mass flight of families from southern suburbs of Beirut due to Israeli shelling

Crowds of cars are suffocating as they leave Beirut’s southern suburbs, with hundreds of families trying to get away from the area that has been under attack by Israeli warplanes in recent hours. New airstrikes took place early today, a few hours after heavy strikes on Friday that targeted Hezbollah’s headquarters, the Israeli military said. In Martyrs’ Square, in the center of the Lebanese capital, many residents looked bewildered. “We were at home when the evacuation warning was issued. We took our IDs, our belongings and went out,” Radwan Messalam, a refugee from Syria, told AFP. This father of six children, aged 3-17, says he has “nowhere to go” since he cannot return to his home country.
