Authorities in Lebanon launched a two-day vaccination marathon against COVID-19 in hospitals across the country on Saturday to boost immunization amid rising cases of the new coronavirus, the national news agency NNA reported.
Health Minister Fira Abiad assured that the first day of the operation was successful: more than 20,000 people were vaccinated.
“We hope to see an even higher number on the second day of the marathon,” he added.
According to its data, 59.6% of the population (6.7 million) have made an appointment to be vaccinated for COVID-19, with 39.3% having received the first dose, 34, 2% the second and 10.5% souvenir.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Health announced that in the previous 24 hours, 1,790 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed and another 12 patients succumbed due to complications of COVID-19.
The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in the Arab country in a deep political and economic crisis has reached this stage with 8,836 deaths out of a total of 688,515 infections.
Earlier this week, Mr Abiad announced that the first two cases of the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus, which is considered more contagious, had been confirmed. Carriers are travelers who arrived at Beirut airport.
