Israel’s ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Zonshine, made blunt statements about the situation in Lebanon during an interview with CNN Brazil this Friday (27). According to the diplomat, the country “was kidnapped by Hezbollah’, a group that he classifies as a terrorist organization.
Zonshine stated that Hezbollah acts as an “arm of Iran” in Lebanon, being financed, armed and trained by Tehran. “The people of Lebanon are paying the price for Iran’s interests on Lebanese soil,” declared the ambassador.
War tactics and human shields
The Israeli representative also commented on the tactics used by Hezbollah and Hamas. According to him, both organizations operate “from inside the palace”, using Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip and Lebanese in Lebanon as ‘human shields’.
“It is very difficult to act against terrorist forces in a way that no one will be influenced because of it,” Zonshine explained, referring to the challenges Israel faces in trying to hit specific targets without causing collateral damage.
Response to criticism of Israel’s actions
When asked about President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s statement at the UN General Assembly that “the right to defense cannot be confused with the right to revenge”, the ambassador vehemently disagreed.
“I don’t accept that,” Zonshine said. He insisted that Israel is trying to hit specific targets, whether Hamas in the Gaza Strip or Hezbollah in Lebanese territory, and not seeking revenge.
The ambassador concluded by highlighting that Israel was “invited” to get involved in this “very cruel game by Iran and Hezbollah”, suggesting that the country had no choice but to respond to the threats posed by these organizations.
