THE Legal Amazon had a record of alerts deforestation in april this year.
And the worst index for the month in the history of monitoring carried out by the Institute for Space Research (Inpe), which started in 2015 and started to record data for the first semester from 2016 onwards.
The data were updated this Friday (06), but are still preliminary for the month, as they only count until April 29.
According to the detection by Deter, with data made available by the Terra Brasilis platform of Inpe, there were 1,012.5 km² in April 2022 alone. The 2022 data represents an increase of 74.5% compared to 2021.
Deforestation history in the Legal Amazon for the month of April:
The one registered in April 2022 also represents an increase in deforestation alerts in the Legal Amazon compared to the previous month.
In March of this year, 312.23 km² were accounted for – therefore, an increase of 224.2%.
In the annual accumulated so far, joining data from January to April, the total deforestation in 2022 reaches 1,953.84 km².
THE data is the worst ever recorded in the period since the beginning of monitoring in the first half of 2016.
In 2021, the amount registered in the first months of the year was 1,153.27 km². Thus, deforestation grew by 69.4%.
History of deforestation in the Legal Amazon between January and April:
The annual ratio in other years: 1,204.15 km² in 2020; 773.08 km² in 2019; 1,175 km² in 2018; 360.49 km² in 2017; and 1,083.75 km² in 2016.
In 2022, the state that recorded the most deforestation alerts was the Mato Grosso, with 574.48 km² affected from January to the end of April.
Then there is the Amazon, with 537.28 km²; Pará was the third, with 446.77 km².
The analyzed data are alerts for deforestation with exposed soil, deforestation with vegetation and mining in the Legal Amazon region.
THE CNN contacted the Ministry of the Environment to comment on the data, and is awaiting a response.
