In January 1993, Ford unveiled its Mondeo midsize car for the first time, which for many years became one of the most popular models in the American automaker’s lineup. In 2023, the Ford Mondeo should have celebrated its 30th anniversary, but until then, the legendary model will not survive. Ford has announced the upcoming discontinuation of Mondeo sales.
According to the AutoCar portal, Ford has confirmed that the fifth generation of the legendary Mondeo will be discontinued in March 2022 and the continuation of the line, apparently, should not be expected. The automaker said the decision was made due to a change in customer preferences. Ford is updating its passenger car lineup to meet changing customer needs as it approaches the massive shift to electric vehicles.
When talking about changing customer tastes, Ford is referring to falling demand for executive sedans and station wagons. These models are becoming a thing of the past as the popularity of SUVs grows. At the end of 2020, crossovers and SUVs accounted for 39% of all Ford models sold, an 8% increase compared to 2019.
After Ford Mondeo retires, only two non-crossover and SUV passenger cars will remain in the American brand’s lineup in the European market. These are Ford Fiesta and Focus. And given that Ford recently pledged to fully switch to electric vehicles in Europe by 2030, it is likely that by that time the two models will either face an update or the fate of Mondeo.
