VideoLAN is the name of the project itself and the French non-profit organization that is behind its development. The first release of VLC took place on February 1, 2001.

As noted by the developers, now the VLC media player is regularly used by hundreds of millions of users, and over the years it has been downloaded over 3.5 billion times. In total, about a thousand volunteers managed to work on the project.
