The Federal Supreme Court (STF) and Congress return to work this Tuesday (1st) after the year-end recess.
According to Daniela Lima, anchor of CNNthe president of the STF, Minister Luiz Fux, has not yet explained to his colleagues what types of judgments should open the Court’s work.
In conversation with the anchor of the CNNone of the ministers said that this is a delicate year and that caution is required, as the political environment is “peculiar”, and it is important to avoid unnecessary friction.
Daniela Lima explains that it is a year of disputed elections, seen by many experts as the most important since redemocratization.
The STF Court will resume work, however, with an impasse between Alexandre de Moraes and the Planalto, as President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) failed to comply with the minister’s order and did not appear for testimony at the Federal Police (PF) about the leak of a confidential investigation by the institution. .
About this, the minister told Daniela Lima that he had doubts whether “it is worth the STF to invest in this crusade”.
However, if the word is caution in the Supreme Court, Arthur Lira (Progressistas-AL), president of the Chamber of Deputies, will invest in debates such as semi-presidentialism and the Gambling Law Project, a controversial subject that has the evangelical bench as the main opponent.
The first few months, between March and June, should be about the semi-presidential debate. In this regime, there is a prime minister and a president, and power is shared with the national Congress.
The idea is to bring people from other countries to comment on how it is done.
This, however, would only be adopted from 2030 onwards, as influential political figures today, such as President Bolsonaro and Lula, are against the model.
Another point that must be addressed is mining on indigenous lands.
Congress also awaits the debate on the fuel PEC. Another idea is for parliament to help authorize the government to exempt federal taxes on diesel, PIS/COFINS, to try to hold down fuel and product inflation.
According to Renata Agostini, policy analyst at CNN, some of these issues will be long term, such as the gambling bill. In a conversation with Agostini, one of the leaders of the Chamber said that it is likely that, if approved, this project will be vetoed by President Jair Bolsonaro. The question would then remain whether a vote would be opened to overturn the veto.
Leandro Resende, policy analyst at CNN, says that, as it is an election year, it is difficult for major reforms to pass. Thus, the discussion will remain in the customs. The PL of gambling can even be mentioned in the electoral race.
