Leica Camera AG and Sharp yesterday announced a long-term technology partnership. At the same time, they unveiled the first smartphone jointly developed for the Japanese market. This is the Sharp AQUOS R6 smartphone. According to the partners, they “work closely together in the field of optical engineering and development of innovative solutions to achieve the best image quality in the segment of smartphone photography.”

The AQUOS R6 smartphone has an image sensor that is atypically large for smartphone cameras (its optical format is 1 inch). The sensor is paired with a lens developed by Leica. The smartphone itself deserves a separate news, which will be published shortly.
When reporting on the partnership, the companies were reminded a bit of their history. The Japanese company Sharp, which is a large electronics manufacturer, was founded in 1912. The German company Leica Camera AG, specializing in the production of digital and analog cameras, lenses for them, binoculars, scopes and other optical devices, was founded in 1849.
