Mature and vaccinated. That’s how it is defined Leo Gullotta on the eve of an incandescent August which, for some, could be an indicator of the coming autumn. While waiting for the famous “restart” of the audiovisual to take off for real, Gullotta does not stop for a moment: he has just completed the filming of That place in time, the new film by Giuseppe Alessio shot in Naples and dedicated to the theme of senile dementia; took part in the new Netflix series of Ficarra and Picone, The stuck, and participated in a short film on how to treat grandparents in RSA. On the phone, however, he answers from Rome, waiting to receive the Golden Film award on July 30th, the recognition assigned to the workers and craftsmanship of the Italian audiovisual film industry which, this year, will go to him, Ricky Tognazzi, Simona Izzo and Gianni Quaranta.

“It is an important award because it is awarded by the technical department: working in the cinema is an ensemble work, you can’t get anywhere on your own “ Gullotta explains that, at 75 years of life and 54 years of career, he feels he must partially give back what he has received: “Whoever has had, must know how to give,” he says with a firm voice, as if his thoughts were speeches delivered in a solemn, without smudges, written to be recited by a professional who, during his career, has met great names such as Sciascia, Fava, Ferro and Mastroianni, assuming the appearance of a sponge of experience and study: something that today, in the a moment when everyone wants everything and wants it now, it now seems impossible.

Teamwork is important to her, but the impression is that today everyone gives more importance to the individual.

«The pandemic has led us to think differently than before: it is necessary to have a vision, to be more far-sighted. On the other hand, however, he also showed us the exasperation of cynicism, inhumanity and selfishness ».

Of this period, did you understand something more about yourself?

“Respect for life, for ourselves and for those in front of us, not to mention the importance of fighting for rights. You cannot shrug in the face of certain reflections: you need to think about a new concept of community and society, to have another path. Not surprisingly, the children most affected by this situation were: no one thought about it and, for this, they will pay more than anyone. In this year and a half, science has taken extraordinary steps: getting vaccinated means regaining life from many points of view, and I’m sorry for those who think the opposite, for those who have never asked and have absurd certainties without the possibility of dialogue ».

Returning to rights, one of the hottest topics of recent months, together with that of the Green Pass, was the Zan Ddl.

«I support him from all points of view. Citizens, with civility and without violence, can raise their finger and say they disagree, but they must enter the public debate. Our country has always delegated to others, as if it only wanted a man in charge: instead, we must overcome these fences and regain respect for others ».

Where do these fences go from?

“From the fact that the politics of the last 30 years have given birth to a large number of people who have spoken only in the stomach and never in the head. In the midst of this mania for protagonism, cell phones and photographing ourselves, we must not lose sight of important achievements such as civil marriage for homosexuals, which fortunately has arrived. It was a step forward, but now we have to take another: the Zan law, in fact. That parliament should promote as it should ».

You have immediately honored the civil union.

“The problem is always that we live in a country that in the last 30 years has been based on the art of getting by, the age-old disease of the Italians.”

Have you ever made do?

“Never. As a child I always had the opportunity to meet great professionals who made sure that my job was just to study. Today it is more difficult, even if Italian cinema has produced great artists such as Favino, Germano, Giallini, Leo, Rohrwacher, people who make us understand every day how necessary it is to know the language of the stage, of the camera, of the body. How to go to work ».

You have been working for 54 years: what state is the cinema in today?

«Aggravated by the fact that we live in a country that does not believe in the concept of culture and delays everything. I attribute this to the fact that the Italian politician does not know and does not want to know the so-called “show machine”. 80 thousand people did not work for 2 years: there was no outstretched hand, but only a few help, as if one did not want to recognize the incredibility of this category. The show, however, is not a shop that opens and closes, but needs organization. Streaming theater is not theater, cinema is cinema: everything is more complex ».

He is very passionate: have you ever thought of going into politics?

«Making politics is the task of every citizen, as well as choosing one’s point of view, as long as it is not dictated by the stomach. It is important to try to understand what kind of society you want, it cannot all be dictated by the buriana ».

She has always preferred discretion to the buriana blowing out, so much so that we know very little about her private life: is it a choice that rewards today, in your opinion?

“I’ve always divided work from life. Everything has its pros and cons, but you have to live life, you can’t rely on how the day goes. I also think of the many young people of today who do not have certain prejudices ».

They certainly have more tools to inform themselves.

“It is likely, however, that many of them do not know where to look because they ignore the directions. Today we work a lot with mobile phones, but I believe that these means, in most cases, are used very badly ».

Don’t you use them?

“Absolutely no. I am afraid of the cynicism behind it, the frustration thrown on anyone who says something: the poisonousness and hatred I just can’t accept them, as well as anonymity – if I have something to tell you I’ll tell you to your face – and reading of marches and gatherings for football or other controversies. It is not that Italy wakes up and goes to the streets: everything is guided by the next votes. Politicians have to put up flags, and this is embarrassing. At this moment it is science that we need to listen to, but they don’t care about that ».

Do you feel optimistic about the future?

“I’ve never lost optimism, but you have to be careful not to confuse it with sitting down and shrugging. Never that ».
