Leptospirosis outbreaks in Brazil after deadly floods – Authorities worried

Outbreaks of leptospirosis have emerged in Brazil following the devastating floods, raising concerns for health authorities. This is a bacterial infection that is usually spread by rats. According to data from the health authorities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, five deaths due to leptospirosis have been confirmed so far, while another nine are suspected and are being investigated. In total, 124 cases of leptospirosis have been laboratory confirmed and 922 others are being tested in this state. The devastating floods that swept the Rio Grande do Sul have claimed the lives of at least 169 people, while the fate of 53 residents is still unknown. Large areas have turned into vast lakes, endangering the population. Leptospirosis is usually transmitted by the urine of infected animals, mainly rodents.
