Yesterday AMD officially unveiled its new Epyc 7003 server processors, and today it is Intel’s turn: the blue have finally officially unveiled their 11th generation Core processors for desktop computers, also known as Rocket Lake-S. Consider it a pure coincidence, but Intel is reporting exactly the same IPC gain over its predecessors as AMD yesterday – 19%.

For casual users, there is a lot of good news and one bad news. But let’s start with the good ones. In addition to a 19% increase in IPC, the performance of integrated GPUs has increased by up to 50% (Rocket Lake-S uses GPUs based on Intel Xe architecture). The new products provide performance gains in deep learning tasks due to Intel’s proprietary tool, Deep Learning Boost, and support for Vector Neural Network instructions.
But home users will be much more interested in the fact that Rocket Lake-S supports DDR4-3200 MHz RAM and 20 PCIe 4.0 interface lanes. Yes, yes, now the video card and fast SSD can be connected directly to the corresponding processor controller, bypassing the chipset. This increases the speed of at least a solid-state drive. It also supports Resizable BAR technology, HDMI 2.0, Thunderbolt 4 (as well as USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 with a bandwidth of 20 Gbps) and Wi-Fi 6E.
The new processors are faster than the old ones in games. Thus, the Core i9-11900K bypasses the Core i9-10900K in games such as Gears 5, Grid 2019, Microsoft Flight Simulator and Total War: Three Kingdoms by 8-14%. According to official data, in the same games, the Core i9-11900K is faster than the Ryzen 9 5900X, but its superiority is already slightly less – 3-11%.

There are currently 19 models in the Rocket Lake-S family with TDPs from 35 to 125 W, 6-8 cores and frequencies up to 5.3 GHz. Their characteristics are as follows.

And now it’s time for the bad news: CPU prices have gone up. Not all models and not much, but, for example, in the case of the flagship Core i9-11900K, the difference with its predecessor is $ 51. And this despite the fact that the Core i9-10900K is a ten-core and operates at the same high frequency. At the same time, it should be noted that the cost of the models of the Core i5 line has not changed.

Rocket Lake-S are designed to work with motherboards based on 500 series chipsets, but they are also backward compatible with current motherboards based on 400 series chipsets.
