Less than a year later: EA officially shuts down mobile Apex Legends due to low online

Just last year, in May 2022, developers from the Respawn Entertainment studio, under the auspices of the publisher Electronic Arts, introduced the world to the mobile version of the rather popular Apex Legends battle royale. And although the project initially seemed very attractive, providing some features that gamers would like to see in the desktop version, the popularity of the mobile battle royale fell inexorably. And, apparently, the online dropped so much that yesterday, January 31, the management of Electronic Arts officially announced the closure of Apex Legends Mobile – the oxygen to the project servers will be blocked already on May 1, that is, exactly one year after the launch of the video game.

It’s not all bad news for a small army of mobile battle royale fans, though. Employees of the Respawn Entertainment studio in an official appeal to the players stated that when the game servers are closed, the project will completely disappear, and with it all the items and add-ons that were purchased by the audience as part of Apex Legends Mobile. And although gamers are usually used to getting refunds for at least some period of time in such situations, for example, if purchases were made within the past month, Electronic Arts, in its characteristic manner, decided not to refund anything to anyone. In accordance with the terms of the user agreement, the company has the right not to refund gamers for purchases made in this mobile video game.

Representatives of Respawn Entertainment reported that the decision to close the royal battle was made jointly with a development partner, Tencent, a media giant from China, which supported the project in the Middle Kingdom. Studio staff, together with the publisher, came to the conclusion that immediately after the release, the developers were unable to maintain a high quality bar both in terms of quantity and frequency of released content. However, the publisher does not intend to completely abandon the franchise – the management of Electronic Arts said that it plans to rethink the mobile version of the royal battle in order to improve the gaming experience and change the vector of development on mobile platforms in the future.

But will gamers in the future play the new Apex Legends Mobile, given that the publisher has acted with them, to put it mildly, not very nice? And the popularity of the mobile Battlefield, the development of which has so far been postponed until a better time, will also drop dramatically – it’s hard to believe developers who can close a shooter in a year in which players have invested hundreds and thousands of dollars.
