Last October, Google officially released a new background replacement feature for the Meet desktop app. The user could blur the background behind him or use the adaptation of the “green screen” to change the background to something else. And now, a little less than a year later, a similar feature is officially presented in the Google Meet app for the Android platform and in the web version of the service. Google considers this feature to be extremely useful, as it allows you to make video calls at conferences more fun while maintaining complete confidentiality.
However, at the moment, the background replacement function has a number of limitations that hamper the user’s capabilities a little. For example, at the start of this function in the web version and on Android, there will be only three options for replacing the background – a classroom, a party and a forest. Plus, of course, there is a function to completely blur the background, and the “backdrops” for replacement are promised to be expanded in the future. Moreover, most users will be given access to this feature only on June 30, but for the web version you need to have a relatively fresh version of the Google Chrome browser – from 87 and higher. There is no information about restrictions on the version of the Android operating system, so, apparently, everything depends solely on the latest version of Google Meet.

Also, the developers of Google announced that it will be possible to use your own image to replace the background, as well as to use the replacement background function on iPhone and iPad devices in the near future. And, of course, customers of Google Workspace, G Suite Basic and Business will also be provided with the opportunity to replace the background, while the deployment for subscribers of the corporate sector is planned to begin even before the official release.
