Lessa shot to kill Marielle, Anderson and advisor, says prosecutor

During the second day of the trial of the defendants for the death of councilwoman Marielle Franco (PSOL) and driver Anderson Gomes, prosecutor Eduardo Martins stated that the objective of the shooter, former military police officer Ronnie Lessa, was to kill all three people who were in the victims’ car, and not just the parliamentarian.

On Wednesday (30), during the first day of the trial, Lessa stated that he had no intention of murdering the driver. “In terms of wanting to resolve it quickly, I consciously took the risk and, unfortunately, the Anderson issue happened. It wasn’t the purpose. I hit the councilwoman, but I knew the risk of hitting someone else,” said the former police officer.

In the prosecutor’s view, by killing all the occupants of the car, Lessa intended to burn files. “If I leave the driver alive, he can write down my license plate, he can tell which way the car turned, he can call 911 and say: ‘run after that license plate, the person who just shot the gun’.”

According to Martins, the Chevrolet Cobalt carrying Marielle, Anderson and advisor Fernanda Chaves was hit by at least 14 shots. Fernanda survived.

The prosecutor assesses that, if the intention had really been to kill only the councilor, Lessa could have asked his partner Élcio de Queiroz – who was driving the car – to stop behind the victims’ vehicle and shoot directly towards Marielle.

However, one of the images shown reveals that the shooters’ car was positioned next to the councilwoman’s car and hit the entire side of the car. “The radius of the shots passes through all the passengers in the case.”

“Why does he have to sweep the car from one side to the other? Because he wants to kill everyone. Because he knows that by stopping there he would have the best angle to catch everyone in the car”, added the prosecutor.

“Anderson receives more shots than Marielle. Marielle has already been hit, but he [Lessa] continues to press and turn around the car”, added Martins.

R$25 million for death

Also on the first day of the trial, Lessa stated that she had received an offer of R$25 million to kill the councilor. “I was blind: my share was R$25 million. I could say: ‘it was the pope’, and I was going to kill the pope”, he said.

Lessa also said that she regrets having committed the crime and asked the victims’ family for forgiveness.
