Letizia of Spain turns 49: her first birthday with the (half) empty nest

Letizia ortiz turns 49 years old. For the Queen of Spain, born in Oviedo on September 15, 1972, this is the first birthday col (half) empty nest. The former journalist and her husband, King Felipe VI, they have two daughters: the fifteen year old Leonor and the fourteen year old Sofia. Small royals who are increasingly busy growing up. Especially the future Queen Leonor, who has just started a new life in Wales all’UWC Atlantic College, a prestigious school where the leaders of tomorrow are trained. For the first time Leonor is away from her family, for the first time mother Letizia, on her birthday, will not have both daughters by her side.

When Leonor left for Cardiff, Wales, both her sovereign parents and her inseparable sister Sofia accompanied her to the airport. Vanity Fair, it seemed the most tried. On the other hand Leonor and Sofia, grown together almost like twins, they attended the same school (albeit in different classes) and never separated in public either. Even for mother Letizia, saying goodbye to her eldest daughter for two years must not have been easy. From that moment we have the images spread on social media, in which we see, among other things, the Queen of Spain as any mother he hugs his eldest daughter in a tender embrace.

For the former reporter, this 49th birthday probably tastes bitter-sweet. One of her two daughters is far away, but she is far away to build her future as a queen. And her path – a path she is destined for from birth – will be completely different from that of her mother. The daughter of a journalist and a nurse and trade unionist, a taxi driver grandfather, Ortiz, who married Felipe in May 2004, struggled a lot to make the Spaniards digest “a contrast of blue blood and red blood “ very flashy. Until recently, the nobility mingled with the people only at bullfights. After the marriage with Felipe Letizia it was mercilessly criticized for being too thin, for clothing, for the passion for heels and aesthetic touches, for the sentimental past, for his past as a leftist militant, for the haughty and distant ways. And several times, over the years, there have been rumors of marital crises: Letizia and Felipe, according to the Spanish tabloids, they have often been on the verge of divorce. Also much talked about the family coldness caused by Ortiz’s tensions with her mother-in-law, the former Queen Sofia of Greece, always popular with the Spaniards for her extraordinary patience with her unfaithful husband Juan Carlos.

Little by little, however, Letizia managed to recover consensus. Also thanks to his daughters. At least on one point, in fact, a good part of the Spanish public opinion agrees: Ortiz is a great mom. Which today blows out 49 candles, for the first time, with the nest half empty.
