Earlier this Thursday afternoon, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a package of economic sanctions on Russia. Johnson reiterated that there will be retaliation for the attacks led by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine this morning.
“We will use the UK position throughout the international forum to condemn the actions against Ukraine. And we will charge the issue of lies and we will charge Putin for his aggression and choice of war,” he said.
The prime minister announced that the sanctions package launched by the United Kingdom is the largest ever seen by Russia. Among the measures are a financial freeze and an export ban.
“These powers will allow us to exclude Russian banks from the UK’s financial system, which is the largest in Europe, preventing them from accessing and making payments through the UK,” he said.
It also announced the suspension of financing and loans for Russian companies, as well as a limitation on the number of funds they can deposit in British bank accounts. According to the prime minister, the measures will also apply to Belarus – aligned with Putin.
“We are going to create new legislation to ban the export of items to Russia, including technological items, technological components, in sectors such as electronics, telecommunication and aerospace,” he announced.
According to the prime minister, the legislation should be enacted next week and other measures should be announced before Easter. “We are going to keep squeezing Russia out of the world economy, day after day, week after week.”
Johnson also said he will invite members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to a meeting this Friday (25). “We need to strengthen NATO’s defenses,” he said.
