In an interview with CNNthis Friday (15), the coordinator of the FAAP International Relations course, Fernanda Magnotta, commented on the risks of using nuclear weapons by Russia after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in an interview that the “world must prepare for the chance of Putin using nuclear weapons.”
“When we think about nuclear weapons, we cannot forget that Russia has one of the largest arsenals in the world, estimates are around 5,000 to 6,000 nuclear warheads, and of these weapons there are those that are considered strategic and those that are considered tactics,” said the teacher.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN said Friday that “all countries in the world” must be prepared for the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin using tactical nuclear weapons in his war against Ukraine.
Zelensky told Jake Tapper of CNNin an exclusive interview at the president’s office in Kiev on Friday (15), that Putin could resort to nuclear or chemical weapons because he does not value the lives of the people of Ukraine.
According to Fernanda, the discussion that is currently taking place in Ukraine is because although Russia has part of this arsenal always on standby, the doctrine that guides the use of this arsenal is a little imprecise.
“Russia’s official documents say that nuclear weapons would only be used in the event of an existential threat to Russia, the problem is that in addition to being broad, vague and allowing for various narrative maneuvers, it is also accompanied by a series of complaints, especially by the CIA,” he says.
The expert added that at this point nuclear weapons could be seen as a way to create even more chaos in the conflict.
“There is also a concrete risk, a threat that lies ahead, which has constantly drawn the attention of Western security forces and especially the CIA”.
