Let’s reindustrialize Brazil on top of cheap energy, says Guedes

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, reiterated this Wednesday (19) that Brazil must be reindustrialized, focusing on the generation of clean, renewable and cheap energy. The speech was made at the opening panel of the Brazil Exports event, which takes place in Brasília.

“There is this perception abroad that Brazil is a food power. I overheard the director-general of the WTO publicly praising Brazil at a meeting. I also heard the same praise from the OECD secretary-general, Matias Cormann, in relation to energy, saying that Brazil is key to the world’s energy security,” she said.

In addition to the country’s reindustrialization program, Guedes reinforced the idea of Brazil becoming an agro-industrial power, in addition to the country’s ability to produce and export agricultural commodities. According to Guedes, this movement is possible due to Brazil’s ability to generate clean and cheap energy.

“Brazil is key to protecting the world’s environment, Brazil is in a position to increase agricultural productivity without cutting down a tree, and it will do so, through the agreements on climate change that we are signing. At the same time, we are going to re-industrialize Brazil, if we are an agricultural power, we have to be an agro-industrial power. We are a clean energy powerhouse.” he stated.

Paulo Guedes also reaffirmed the interest of European countries in investing in the production of wind energy in northeastern Brazil. Due to the sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, the European continent has suffered from an energy supply crisis and high inflation.

Guedes also emphasized a speech by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yelle. According to him, Yellen has pointed out that the new investment model in the world must consider geographic proximity and diplomatic relations, and Brazil’s prominent role in this new configuration.

“Investments from now on have to be in nearby countries, it’s no use making semiconductors in Taiwan. It has to be close. At the same time, being close is not enough. Russia is close to Europe but hostile. Who is close, and is friend? Everyone looked at Brazil. Brazil is an investment frontier,” said Paulo Guedes.
