With their letter to the Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Tassoula, the secretary of K.O. of SYRIZA P.S. Olga Gerovasilis and the head of Culture and Member of Parliament for Achaia Sia Anagnostopoulou raise serious questions about the Ministry of Culture and Sports’s proposal that was submitted yesterday (1/9) and will be introduced to the competent committee on Monday (5/9) for to be voted on in the Parliament next Thursday (8/9), s/n of the Ministry of Culture and Sports entitled: “Sanction of the agreement between the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Museum of Cycladic Art of Athens, the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York and of the Institute of Ancient Greek Culture of Delaware, regarding the return to Greece of a collection of one hundred and sixty-one (161) antiquities of the Cycladic Civilization, located in New York and the exhibition of this and other antiquities of the Cycladic Civilization at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York” .
As they note in their letter: “This is an extreme bill that goes against archaeological legislation, exposes the country and distances it from the legal claim of antiquities that have been illegally removed from its territory.”
With this letter, they request the withdrawal of the bill that insults the authority of the parliament and that smoothes the ground for the legalization of antiquities theft and illegal exports of antiquities. In addition, they require the submission to the Parliament of all the documents on the basis of which the relevant agreement was made.
