Lettuce in… Australian Cabinet

Who would have thought that lettuce price would become a central issue in a cabinet? An illustrative example of the general increase in daily commodities in Australia.

Lettuce was on the agenda of the Australian Cabinet today, with a statement from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese himself, who was involved in the debate that has been going on for days in the country, as the price of, for many, a favorite lettuce jumped to $ 12 a piece .

The demand that has opened is great, but the availability of lettuce is very limited after natural disasters that destroyed the crops and even threaten the growers with complete collapse, in case there is no immediate support from the state.

In fact, the shortage is so great that the well-known fast food chain KFC announced this week that in hamburgers with chicken, it is going to replace lettuce with cabbage. “This is ridiculous, it is wrong,” Albanese said in a radio interview today. He said it with a smile, it is the truth, noting that his son loves these hamburgers. But he went on to say that his government would take action to address the economic hardship that plagues many Australians.

Outrageous price increase in simple, everyday products

The news may be blatant, but it is indicative of the general increase in daily commodities, which many Australian households are now finding difficult to purchase. Lettuce in particular, as well as the prices of other products, were heavily involved in the recent election campaign and it is noted that the increased cost of living contributed to the fall of the previous Conservative government. The increases in prices, not only in products, but also in electricity and gas, are largely attributed to the rising inflation, which is about 6%, twice the rate that the Central Bank of the country wants.

In fact, in an effort to help curb inflation, the Central Bank this week raised the official interbank interest rate by 0.50%, raising it to 0.85%. On the one hand, this made those who have time deposits happy, while at the same time it was unbearably burdening the comparatively more borrowers and especially those who took out a mortgage in recent years, when the interest rate was still low.

The new Labor government has said its budget for the coming months will include measures to alleviate households, but acknowledged that this will be far from easy, as the country is vulnerable not only to internal factors, such as the unpredictable. natural disasters, but also the effects of the general international situation, without of course excluding the situation in Ukraine.
